A litter mat reduces tracking. It does not erase it. Granules stuck to paws drop in the first few steps. A mat at the exit catches that scatter. Litter your cat kicks over the rim still lands beside the box, not on the mat, unless the mat is wide enough to cover that splash zone.
What a double-layer mat does
The top layer has openings. Litter falls through as the cat walks, instead of staying on the surface to be tracked further. The bottom layer holds it until you empty the tray. Petova’s current mat is the beige 40×50 double-layer mat: large enough for one box exit, not for a whole hallway.
How to place it
- Put the long side against the side your cat actually steps out of.
- If litter still appears two steps past the mat, the mat is too small for that cat’s stride, or the box is being kicked from above.
- Keep scooping daily. A mat does not replace a scoop.
How to clean it
Lift the top, dump the trapped litter into the trash, rinse both layers, and let them dry before they go back. A wet mat sticks litter to paws again.
On full box changes, thick liners make the lift cleaner. See thick liners vs regular bags and the rest of Litter & Cleanup.
FAQ
Do cat litter mats stop tracking?
A litter mat catches granules that fall off the paws at the box exit. It does not stop a cat from kicking litter out of the box.
Where should I place a litter mat?
Lay it flush to the exit path your cat uses. A mat that sits sideways to the doorway misses most tracked litter.
Do double-layer litter mats help in apartments?
Yes. A double-layer mat traps granules in the mesh so you can dump them back into the box instead of sweeping the hallway.
